Six groups: fixed, trimless, gimbal, modular, linear, large aperture
COB fixed is the volume product: a 5W to 25W downlight in round and square versions with a die-cast heatsink, at 70-100 lm/W and IP20, in cut-outs from 75 mm to 225 mm. Trimless uses the same engine without a visible bezel, plastered into the ceiling so the light appears from a clean aperture — the usual choice in hotels and high-end retail.
Gimbal adds 30° of tilt and rotation for wall washing and for angled displays, at 80-140 lm/W and IP44. Modular MR16 takes a replaceable MR16 lamp in a fixed or adjustable body from 5W to 10W. Linear (DL30, DL60, DL76, DL90) is a continuous line of light for reception desks and retail ceilings. Large aperture D100-D220 covers 10W to 35W for double-height spaces.

Efficacy figures are from the published datasheets of the individual models. COB fixed and trimless share the same light engine; the difference is the bezel.
Cut-out sizes: what fits an existing hole
A downlight retrofit is decided by the hole in the ceiling. The COB range starts at a 75 mm cut-out for 5W and 10W and steps to 225 mm for 25W, which covers the common halogen and CFL apertures found in hotels and offices. Measure the hole, not the old bezel: a 90 mm bezel often sits over a 75 mm hole.

Cut-out and dimension are the published values for the standard COB models; the gimbal and large-aperture ranges differ. Always confirm against the drawing before cutting.
Replacing halogen and compact fluorescent downlights
The saving in a downlight retrofit is large because halogen is inefficient and short-lived. A 50W GU10 halogen lamp delivers about 400 lm and lasts 2,000 hours; a 5W LED downlight delivers 450-550 lm and is rated for 30,000 hours or more. In a hotel with 400 downlights running 8 hours a day, that is the difference between changing every lamp twice a year and not changing them for a decade.

Halogen and CFL figures are typical catalogue values for the lamps being replaced, not measured on site.
CRI, glare and IP rating
CRI is 80 or better as standard, which is the level at which skin tones and merchandise look natural. The COB models use a deep reflector that keeps the light source out of direct view, and the linear DL range is specified at UGR below 19 for spaces where people sit and work facing the ceiling — the usual reason a conventional downlight is rejected in an office.
IP20 is the standard for dry interiors. For bathrooms, kitchens and covered outdoor areas, the gimbal range is IP44 and the sealed versions are IP65 on request. Do not put an IP20 downlight above a shower regardless of the CRI.

Frequently asked questions
What replaces a 50W GU10 halogen downlight?
A 5W or 7W COB downlight in a 75 mm cut-out, giving 450-550 lm against the halogen's 400 lm. If the existing fitting is a GU10 lamp holder rather than a sealed downlight, the modular MR16 range keeps the replaceable-lamp idea with an LED engine.
Which downlight for a bathroom?
The gimbal range at IP44 as a minimum, or an IP65 sealed version above a shower zone. A standard IP20 COB downlight is not suitable for a wet zone even if it is dimmable and high CRI.
What is a trimless downlight for?
When the ceiling should show light without a visible bezel — hotels, high-end retail, plastered ceilings. The body is set into the plaster and the aperture is finished flush, so the fitting has to be planned before the ceiling is closed.
Do you supply dimmable versions?
Yes, on the COB and gimbal ranges. Confirm the dimmer type and the minimum load on the enquiry, because trailing-edge and leading-edge dimmers behave differently and a mismatch shows as flicker at low output.
What CRI do I need for retail?
Ra90 for merchandise where colour accuracy sells the product, Ra80 for circulation and back-of-house. The COB range is Ra80 standard with Ra90 on request.
Can the linear downlight be used in an office?
Yes — the DL30, DL60, DL76 and DL90 linear ranges are specified at UGR below 19, which is the requirement for screen-based work. They are usually mounted in continuous runs rather than as single units.
